New Year’s Eve as the Globalized Festival

Num°14 FESTIVAL I
Heller

The Bible commands that after having worked for six days, we should rest on the seventh. This day should be different from all others: a day of solid pleasures, of contemplation, a day dedicated to God. A day which divides the “before” and the “after,”’ a border, a measure, “peras,” as the ancient Greeks said. The festive day repeats itself rhythmically, too frequently to call for extravagancy. Celebrating Festivals as They Come

Num°14 FESTIVAL I
Waldenfelssiegessäule

Festivals are a sort of hyperphenomenon. Firstly, they take place here and now, but exceeding every kind of normality. Partly, they refer to recurrent events such as springtime or Thanksgiving; partly, they remind us of personal events like our own birth, of religious events like the birth of Christ or of political events like the French revolution whose singularity is celebrated by repeating the unrepeatable. Momentary Festive Atmosphere

Num°14 FESTIVAL I
Nancy

Festivities are a break within time. They are the exception, the suspension of courses and discourses. Holidays: A Philosophical Gaze

Num°14 FESTIVAL I
Perone

As it has been written, “Holidays are an invariant that has never stopped changing”.  History, sociology, and anthropology have a legitimate predilection for variants; philosophy prefers the unchangeable ground. By this I do not mean that the former stop at the phenomena of holidays and the latter limits itself to an allegedly invariable essence. Leggi tutto »

The Festive Theater: Georg Fuchs’ Early Theater Theory

Num°14 FESTIVAL I
Eloisa

Around the turn of the nineteenth century, the German publisher, art-critic, theatre theorist, and play-writer Georg Fuchs started to develop his own theatre-theory, which is best known to theatre historians through the 1907 book Die Revolution des Theaters. Fuchs first realized his claim for a revolutionary, anti-naturalistic stage and theatre, which was to become completely new in form as well as in meaning, during his years of cooperation with the designer and architect Peter Behrens, from 1899 to 1905. The Time of Holidays

Num°14 FESTIVAL I
FabrisGiacometti

To speak of holidays means to speak of time. The time of holidays is not vacation time, that is, empty time; rather, it is meaningful time that refers beyond itself. Today, however, it is difficult to experience such a kind of time. Due also to the impact of new technologies, today time has, as it were, exploded; Leggi tutto »
