CHARME AND CHANCE

EDITORIAL

Grace implies everything and beyond. It is what surprises us, yet it is not the uncanny. It happens in its own time – the favorable time – and manifests itself suddenly. It astonishes, yet it does not frighten us because the consequences of its happening are always an addition of good, an increase in what is positive; feelings of pleasure and joy correspond to this. When it occurs, grace does not take anything away; grace adds, donates, gives. Leggi tutto »

Filling the Void or Filling the Full? On the Concept of Grace

Num°17 GRACE
asterisk

Grace is not sacrifice: it is the opposite of sacrifice in the field of religious language and experience. Nowhere as in the idea of the Holy Trinity does the overcoming of the principle of narrow or strict distribution of space and resources in general come to light. If the Father were to reduce himself in favor of the Son, we would have not grace, but sacrifice. Leggi tutto »

An Interval of Grace: The Time of Ethics

Num°17 GRACE
Skof

In the preliminary introduction, we point to Schopenhauer’s ethics and philosophy of religion and to his peculiar understanding of the notion of freedom as grace. On the basis of this constellation, we then start with three Meadian analyses. We first introduce the topics of space and touch in the discussion of Mead’s philosophy of intersubjectivity and the related problem of an ethical temporality. Leggi tutto »

Beyond the Gift

Num°17 GRACE
scrovegni

To be truly a gift, that is, gratuitous, the gift should be situated outside the logic of exchange and power relations within which givers and receivers are positioned. Self-abnegation, forgiveness, and the will to donate fall instead within the framework of goals and intentions; they thus reveal that authentic gratuitousness is impossible because it would imply perfect sharing between givers and receivers. The Artifice of Grace. The Broken Dream of Modernity

Num°17 GRACE
spinario-musei-capitolini-

The essay explores grace starting with modernity, particularly through a confrontation with Schiller and Kleist. Some features of grace emerge: it is an artifact yet it is essential to nature, to which it belongs; it mixes with nature, yet it is effective in the order of the human and freedom without thereby being chosen; nor can it be repeated as natural immediacy. One arrives at the extreme feature of grace as pure artificiality, which is not convincing either. Leggi tutto »

Touching Grace

Num°17 GRACE
Irigaray

The multiple meanings of “grace” have always implied a relation between two subjects—a relation that is reciprocal, positive, and concerning the whole of our being. Such a relation has to do with (physical and transcendental) “touching.” Cultures have become unaware of this. The essay investigates “grace” in its relation to a form of touching that operates in a corporeal, sensible, and natural way. Leggi tutto »
