ASPECTS OF POVERTY

EDITORIAL

The essays collected in this issue examine two aspects of poverty: the obscure side of indigence and the luminous side of Franciscan poverty. More than a mere editorial choice, the matter is that of an objective complexity of the term “poverty.” It is hard to think that the relation between the two forms of poverty is simple univocity; that is, that the word “poverty” means the same thing in the two cases. Such an affirmation of univocity would amount to placing despair (indigence) and joy (“the highest poverty”) on an equal level. Leggi tutto »

Poverty, Responsibility Practices, and Social Welfare

Num°20 POVERTY
Poverty

This paper addresses the problem of domestic poverty in the Global North. There is a presumption that healthy, capable adults are responsible for meeting their own needs. Still, we must ask when this presumption is defeated and the state becomes responsible for providing welfare payments and services. Leggi tutto »

“Et Coram Patre Le Si Fece Unito”: Reflections on Poverty and its Equivocations

Num°20 POVERTY
Cuniberto

The theme of poverty as spiritual virtue, as radical renunciation to what belongs to oneself and, in the end, as renunciation to one’s own very self is already present in Greek thought, which alludes to it for example through Plato’s image of Penia, Eros’ mother. In the Christian tradition, we find paupertas spiritu, the spiritual poverty mentioned in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Leggi tutto »

Poverty Upside Down

Num°20 POVERTY
Guglielminetti

Christianity introduces a dangerous shift in the order of categories so that poverty ends up assuming a role similar to that played by substance. Poverty becomes the central category to which all others make reference. Health, strength, reason, and success remain part of substance, but substance, the essence, by itself is inessential. Knowing Gendered Poverty in the Global South: A Protracted Path to Progress?

Num°20 POVERTY
Chant&Co

This paper reflects on the difficulties of knowing about the extent and nature of gendered poverty across regions of the Global South in which women have often been assumed to bear a disproportionate share. Some advances have been made in collecting and collating data appropriate to the task, but there remain various lacunae which make it difficult to pinpoint, let alone explain, variations across space and time. “The Sweetness of Nothingness”. Poverty and the Theology of Creation in Bonaventure, Angela of Foligno, and Meister Eckhart

Num°20 POVERTY
Hughes

Although mendicant poverty has been critiqued both practically and theologically in recent years, it captures an insight into ontological reality as contingent beings that Francis of Assisi aimed to capture in his Canticle of the Creatures, and one that should be explored more deeply. Poverty and the Test of Experience: A Confrontation between Rilke and Benjamin

Num°20 POVERTY
Schiavoni

This essay focuses particularly on two German authors who, in the first thirty years of the twentieth century (when, starting with Expressionism, a confrontation with social poverty and its origins becomes unavoidable), seem to emerge over all others because of their originality and evocative power with respect to the theme of Armut, namely, Reiner Maria Rilke among the poets and Walter Benjamin among the philosophers.
